Installed by Northern Sun Energy, Onsite Generation Now Powers 1,800+ Military Homes

Orlando, FL — Northern Sun Energy’s 13-MW installation for the Fort Polk Army Base in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, is now fully operational. Generating enough energy to power 1,800 military homes, this project was developed and completed in conjunction with the U.S. Army, Corvias, CRC Innovations (now Velarium Energy), and Onyx Renewables, with Northern Sun Energy acting as EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction). The Fort Polk solar development represents a major milestone for the U.S. Army’s energy resilience, enhancing its security and mission readiness.

We’re proud to support our military, provide clean and affordable power to the families who serve, and contribute to the U.S. Army’s energy independence,” says Scott Pfaff, V.P. of Construction Operations & Managing Partner at Northern Sun Energy.

Fort Polk, formerly known as Fort Johnson, has 3,600 on-post homes for army personnel. The installation is part of a larger Department of Defense (DoD) “Operational Energy Strategy,” a plan to achieve energy resilience goals by 2035. The U.S. Army is the largest consumer of energy in the DoD, and the Army’s strategy is designed to help ensure mission readiness by increasing local energy independence.

The Fort Polk solar project delivers localized and secure power generation, reducing the base’s dependence on the civilian grid and making operations less vulnerable to extreme weather events, cyber hacking, and physical attacks. In addition to energy resiliency, this independence increases the affordability and reliability of power, further protecting the Army’s critical functions.

The 30,000-panel Fort Polk project entailed complex technical expertise, collaborative project management across partners, and precise execution to deliver the project on time and budget.

“For the military to operate at its best, it needs reliable infrastructure, affordable energy, and confidence in its power sources. Fort Polk is now even better prepared to carry out its day-to-day operations and critical missions,” says Pfaff.
